I WAS BORN IN BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, but grew up in the port city of Mar del plata, on the South Atlantic coast. Just like every other kid, I used to draw and paint, and I was lucky enough to attend several workshops with local artists in my younger years, where I was introduced to many techniques. After I moved to the United States as a teenager, I attended the Magnet Program for painting, drawing and sculpture. After graduating from high school I decided to continue pursuing an education in art with special interest in painting, which took me first to New York City and later to Chicago to earn a BFA and MFA, respectively.

Regarding my own practice, it has been influenced by an amalgamation of many artists and genres. I try to create processes that gesture these influences, but always providing a distinctive point of view. In my recent paintings, I carve lines onto wooden panels, which I fill in with pigment to maintain the voluminous and sculptural qualities of my previous work, but flatten them out. Instead of having the material come out of the painting’s surface, it retreats inside of it, emphasizing the confluence between exterior and interior spaces, which has been a central theme in my last bodies of work. These lines also manifest a tension between a certain appearance of spontaneity and the reality of a painstaking and deliberate process. In the “Line” series I also use wood veneers and silk fabrics that allow me to reference different spaces and motifs while maintaining its materiality. I play with the spatial contradictions that painting inherently has, and the perception of space, while confronting the viewer with issues of pictorial representation. These paintings result in ambiguous dualisms and pairing of opposites — abstraction and representation, interior and exterior, artifice and reality, profundity and flatness — while questioning ideas of work, paint application and form. In this series, I also intend to represent the mechanical methods used to create the lines along with the organic nature of the different woods and the ornamental qualities of the silk fabrics. Sanding and fusing them together to the same spatial level, I attempt to create a mystical state that emphasizes the ritualistic process of making a painting. In a certain way, these paintings are about the primal decisions the artist has to make while attempting to resolve the pictorial and compositional issues behind the paintings.
